Cerrejón OperationsThe core section of the complex, Cerrejón Norte, was originally a joint venture between Intercor, a subsidiary of the Exxon Corporation, and Carbocol, owned by the Colombian government. The original consortium, Anglo American, BHP Billiton and Glencore acquired the interests of both original partners, plus a number of smaller mines in the adjoining area; a process which culminated in 2002 and an arrangement that remains in place today. In 2006 Xstrata plc secured 100% of Glencore’s share of Cerrejón and CMC. Cerrejón continues to achieve world-class production results. It maintains a competitive position in the international coal market due to its consistently high quality coal and fully integrated mining and transport system(mine-railroad-port) that operates 365 days per year, 24 hours per day. Cerrejón has developed social responsibility programs which provide neighbouring communities, including the native Wayuu people, with a better future, aiming for sustainable development in areas such as education, health, culture, sports, productive projects, the environment, infrastructure enhancement, basic sanitation, training and employment. Much of this work is channelled through the four Cerrejón foundations, details of which can be found on the Cerrejón website www.cerrejoncoal.com |
