Accountability: Our integrated coal handling infrastructure – mine-rail-port

The Cerrejón mining complex is located on the La Guajira peninsula in the North East of Colombia. The initial approach to mining of this area of La Guajira was threefold (mine-rail-port) and by 1986 the permanent facilities were completed. While we continue to streamline our operations and strive for ever-greater efficiency, the blueprint of this fully integrated infrastructure is exactly the same today.

Each daily mining activity is planned with technical precision and we continually redesign our strategies of coal extraction to meet demand and production capabilities. In 2009, we extended our operations in the La Puente pit. The development of this resource prepared us for the future demand of our customers and protected the jobs of our employees.
